Get to Know Me
Hello! My name is Christina Griselda Nickerson and I'm a 4th year Ph.D. candidate at the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington.
I'm a first generation college student & scholar. I'm Mexican & Chinese. As a racial + ethnic minority & woman of color, it is crucial to me that I focus energy to improving the quality of higher education that students receive. My passion in teaching lies in helping to elevate marginalized student voices in the field of communication while focusing on building interpersonal communication skills, professional communication skills, and compassion among students.
My research interests lie in the cross between interpersonal communication & health communication. More specifically, I am interested in bridging the gaps in how families (especially those of racial or ethnic minorities) have conversations with their emerging adult children about sexual health and drug use. Sex is a typically "taboo" topic, but the family can be a key resource in helping their children make safe sexual health decisions. Therefore, my research endeavors are focused on improving these conversations and understanding barriers in this family communication occurence.
